It's implied that Kenny's parents had been taken in by the Cult of Cthulhu and subjected to a ritual. The Cthulhu cultists may have revealed part of the reason for Kenny's functional immortality. Soon, the group found themselves dealing with the release of Cthulhu by the BP oil spill. Eventually it was revealed that he became Mysterion, a local superhero who comes up against Professor Chaos (aka Butters).ĭuring the fourteenth season of the series, the rest of the boys joined the pair and Cartman (who'd come up with the superhero persona of the Coon) in making their own characters. Many of his deaths have come as a result of him sacrificing himself for someone else. Recent South Park games have incorporated Kenny's constant deaths into the character's play style.ĭespite the litany of deaths he's suffered over the years, Kenny is possibly the most heroic of the main characters. He's also proven to be fairly resilient when he's alive, surviving injuries that would kill most people before (usually) succumbing to them, or something else, by the end of the episode.
He's been shot, stabbed, crushed, blown up and died of many diseases. In some cases, particularly early episodes, he would magically reappear after being murdered, only to be killed off again before the credits rolled.

Over the course of the series proper and by the end of the most recent season - the 23rd overall - counting the South Park movie, fantasy moments and dream sequences, Kenny has died 100 times. But, inevitably, he reawakens in the real world and has to resume his life as if nothing happened, the memories still trapped in his mind. Sometimes he ends up going to heaven or to hell or remaining in a dark void for some time. He still has a clear and distinct memory of how each death felt and can recall all the various ways he'd been killed. They still happened to Kenny, but no one remembers them besides Kenny.

Even after coming back to life, Kenny has been absent from many of the episodes since, allowing him to quietly survive. At this point, his deaths became more infrequent, along with his overall role in the series. However, Kenny was brought back to life in the sixth season finale "Red Sleigh Down" and rejoined the cast after that. Instead, both Butters and Tweak subbed in as the fourth member of the main group of friends.

Unlike the other deaths Kenny had suffered, though, this one actually lingered in the continuity of South Park. In a strangely dramatic episode titled "Kenny Dies," Kenny contracts and eventually succumbs to a deadly disease, leaving his friends to mourn. This happened in almost every episode of the show's first few seasons, although there were some deviations, such as others wearing Kenny's orange parka being killed instead or a Christmas episode where Kenny's present was that he got to live.Įventually show creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone grew tired of the running gag and decided to kill off the character for good at the conclusion of the fifth season. Yet, when the next episode would begin, Kenny would be back with no explanation. Initially, the death would be met with his friends Kyle and Stan crying "Oh my god, they killed Kenny! Those bastards!" Oftentimes, a swarm of rats would then arrive to consume and pick apart his body. Kenny's recurring deaths have been a running gag on South Park since its earliest seasons.
